Invitations In Islam

Sunnah. It is sunnah to accept the invitation of another Muslim, on condition that no sin is perpetrated at the gathering. (Al-Hindiyyah)

Walimah. As regards the walimah (wedding feast), it is waajib (necessary) to attend it when invited, as mentioned in Raddul Muhtaar. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: He who does not accept an invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.

The Poor. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: ‘The worst feast is that to which poor people are not invited.’ For this reason, the one who gives a walimah feast must ensure that at least a few of the poorer Muslims are also invited.

Simple. A simple and cheap meal served at an invitation should not cause guests to complain. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: If I am invited to a meal of goat trotters, I shall attend.

During the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam went to Umm Hani radhiallahu anha’s house and asked if there were any eatables. She told him that there was dry bread and vinegar. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam asked for it to be brought. He broke the bread into pieces, dipped it into water and added salt. He sprinkled vinegar over the crumbs and ate them. (Baihaqi)

Women. Women may also attend the walimah, as is proven from a hadith in Bukhari. However, other Hadith emphasize the type and mode of dress a woman should adopt when leaving home, like using light-smelling perfume, dressing in ordinary clothing, not fancy and flashy attire, and walking with dignity and humility.

Hadeeth Newsflash

Reported by Jundub bin `Abdullah (RA): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Once someone said: `By Allah! Allah will not forgive such and such (a person).' Thereupon Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, said: `Who is he who takes an oath in My Name that I will not grant pardon to so-and-so? I have granted pardon to so-and-so and rendered your good deeds fruitless.''' [Muslim]
