Home REFLECTING Sunnah Late Nights
Late Nights

‘And (We) made your sleep (a means for) rest, And made the night as clothing.’ (Quran, An- Naba: 9-10) Early to bed and early to rise are habits taught by the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.

Unhealthy. ‘Staying up late is tiring and burdensome.’ (Daarimi) Staying up late and resisting sleep when the body needs it desperately results in health problems, psychological problems, bad temper and loss of enthusiasm

Sunnah. Aisha radhiallahu anha said when she heard Urwah radhiallahu anhu talking after Esha: ‘What is this talk after dark? I have never seen the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam sleeping before this prayer or talking after it. He was either praying and gaining (reward) or sleeping and saved (from evil).’ (Abdur Razzaaq) Ibn Masud radhiallahu anhu said: ‘The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam used to dispraise and warn against staying up after Esha.’ (Ahmad)

Warning. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: ‘Beware of staying up after people’s movements settle’ and in another narration: ‘Beware of staying up after the night has settled, because you do not know what spreads out on the earth from the creatures of Allah.’ (Haakim)

Exceptions. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam did stay up late on occasion to fulfill needs or accomplish tasks for the benefit of the Muslims. ‘Staying up late is for one of 3 categories of people: travelers, those praying night prayers, or those on their wedding night.’ (Abu Yalaa). One can stay up late with the wife, the guest, for learning or for doing good.

Hadeeth Newsflash

Reported by Jundub bin `Abdullah (RA): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Once someone said: `By Allah! Allah will not forgive such and such (a person).' Thereupon Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, said: `Who is he who takes an oath in My Name that I will not grant pardon to so-and-so? I have granted pardon to so-and-so and rendered your good deeds fruitless.''' [Muslim]
