Home THOUGHT PROVOKING... AnonyMouse Howard College Monkeys
Howard College Monkeys

It all started with a horrible trick the girls in the JK upstairs played on the boys downstairs from the window). This is the window that faces the parking lot, which they peep out of all the time(tsk tsk). From the window, they hung a nice yummy Vegetarian Cuisine burger with Chips cheese salad and pregomayo(Is it still R22?). Before long, a boy went towards the w

indow and started to try and reach the burger. As soon as he got near to it, all his friends who were standing by the JK entrance got sprayed with ice cold water from the water cooler by the girls. After a while, another boy made an attempt with the same result-all the boys were sprayed with the cold water. Since it was winter, and the boys started getting cold, anytime another boy tried getting it, the other boys tried to prevent it.

After a couple of weeks, the nasty girls(who also open coke cans in the middle of the boys Jamaat), stopped spraying the water. One of the boys also dropped out of engineering and went to some easier degree and was replaced by another new boy. This new boy saw the new burger and wanted to go eat it. To his surprise and horror, all the other boys attacked him. This one boy named Hassim beat him to a pulp, and he knew that if he tried to get it again, Hassim would most probably kill him.

Over the years, all of the original boys were gone, some started jobs, others were searching for jobs, some pretended to be historians and they all were replaced with new boys. The girls also carried on with their nasty trick(coz all girls are like that) and when the newcomers went for the burger, they were attacked by the previous person. Every time the newest boy took to the stairs, he was attacked. Most of the boys that were beating him up had no idea why they were not permitted to eat the delicious looking burger.

In the end...nobody ever approached the yummy burger hung from the string.

Why not?

Because as far as they know, that's the way it's always been done around here.

My dear respected brothers and sisters, though this might be a fictional tale...we can extract many lessons from here. We need to differentiate in our beautiful deen what is Huq(truth) and what is a ritual or custom. Many of our brothers and sisters are getting married soon, and we need to ask ourselves whether our Islamic orders are more important, or the traditions more. If anyone of us can find it written anywhere that we are to have elaborate functions, dancing, singing or anything of the sort in order to attain a successful marriage, then I will eat my topi, kurta and champalz. Our beloved Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wassalam distinctly told us that the most blessed nikah is the simplest. Not getting married? Then apply this to all aspects of our lives...Perhaps we think that we must dress like p*rnstars on campus and loose our abayas/kurtas just because our friends did it, perhaps we think that we must get a boyfriend or girlfriend on campus just because tradition dictates that is how you get someone, perhaps we think that we must earn interest on our accounts/businesses in order to be successfull just because that is how our parents did it. NO....reflect back on our beautiful deen and find the correct answer from it.

REMEMBER, YOU ARE A MUSLIM FIRST, then you are a husband, wife, engineer, doctor, teacher, parent or whatever else!

Hadeeth Newsflash

Reported by Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Allah, the Exalted, says: `I will contend on the Day of Resurrection against three (types of) people: One who makes a covenant in My Name and then breaks it; one who sells a free man as a slave and devours his price; and one who hires a workman and having taken full work from him, does not pay him his wages.'''
